Vocabulary

Juxtaposing: to place side by side, or unexpected combinations of colors, shapes and ideas.
Semiotics: The study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation.
Encode To put (a message, for example) into code.
Decode To convert from code into plain text.
Representation Something that represents, as:
 -  An image or likeness of something.
 -  An account or statement, as of facts, allegations, or arguments.
 -  An expostulation; a protest.
 -  A presentation or production, as of a play.

Binary oppositions: a binary opposition is a pair of related terms or concepts that are opposite in meaning.

Signify: To have meaning or importance.

Signified: The concept that a signifier denotes.

Iconic: Of, relating to, or having the character of an icon.

Indexical:Of or having the function of an index.

Symbolic: Of, relating to, or expressed by means of symbols or a symbol.

Polycemic:  Is the capacity for a sign (e.g., a word, phrase, etc.) or signs to have multiple meanings.

Synecdoche: Part of something is used to refer to the whole thing.

Metonemy: A figure of speech in which one word or phrase is substituted for another with which it is closely associated.

Mode Of Address:
       Direct: When the magazine text is speaking to you, by using words such as 'your' or 'you.'

       Indirect: When the magazine is not speaking to you such as words like 'all.' 

Hegemony: The dominance or leadership of one social group or nation over others

Hegemonic: The predominant influence, as of a state, region, or group, over another or others.

Versimilitude: the quality of seeming true or of having the appearance of reality

Rule of thirds:

Shot/Reverse shot: is a film technique where one character is shown looking at another character (often off-screen), and then the other character is shown looking back at the first character.

Eyeline match: is a film editing technique associated with the continuity editing system. It is based on the premise that the audience will want to see what the character on-screen is seeing.

Graphic match: is a cut in film editing between either two different objects, two different spaces, or two different compositions in which an object in the two shots graphically match.

Action match:Match on action is a very sinple but essential tenchique, where the perspective of the camera changes during a scene and the scene continues to flow.


Jump cut: is a cut in film editing in which two sequential shots of the same subject are taken from camera positions that vary only slightly.
